Why my laptop works!

I finally got a call from the computer guy yesterday afternoon about my computer. He said my computer was happy and working like new!

Yippy!!

He was so busy with his computer business that it took him almost two weeks before he even got a chance to pick it up and take a look at it. I am a patient woman, btw.

In his words it had lots of gobbledy gook and crap files on it that he cleaned up for me- translation- malware. Then he was poking around and he found a file that he was having trouble deleting- translation- virus. I have always had virus protection and recently changed from McAfee to Kaspersky, neither detected any of this. Nada! This really troubles me a lot!

Anyhow, this virus was attached to my unzipping program (freeware) and apparently it was a nasty little sucker, sucking up my CPU's and overloading my computer.(that's why it was shutting down unexpectedly) He uninstalled the program and guess what?  The darn file was hiding somewhere else in my computer so he had to go hunting for it and get rid of it another way.

Darn!!

I am so glad I brought my computer to this man who was a complete professional and an expert in this type of stuff. Frankly I didn't have a clue all this was going on within my computer's operating system. I'm actually pretty darn careful about what I download and like I said I've alway had up to date virus protection and I thought I was safe.

Water under the bridge....

I'm officially back and officially $140. poorer.

Double darn!

  1. Good for you! I'd be lost without mine. I'm married to a computer guy at the university, so have some advantages. There is free software you can download that really helps keep your computer clean (I run mine every month or so). I have Microsoft Security Essentials on my PC as main one, but also free software: Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) and Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/). You also need to do updates on the software now and then. Just thought I'd pass that on!!

    1. Thanks for the advice I'll have to look up those websites and make sure I utilize them because I can't afford to be doing this type of repair again.

  7. Good to see you posting, Jen. I hate computer problems ... I have an iMac at the office (no virus and such problems) but not at home, so I routinely have to clean up even though I have an anti-virus program.

    1. Thanks Silvia I was so glad to be back. Then my darn computer turned off on its own again this evening. I'm going to have to call the computer guy back tomorrow. I guess I might be going offline again!

  11. Yay...It's fixed and your back...Booo...it's fritzed, you may be gone. What's with this back and forth stuff??!! I have no patience with a PC problem and run screaming into the day and night. For sure I'm on the phone pronto to my HiTechie Son, who says, "Mom, just unplug it." That all goes back to one of the things I can't wrap my head around...Why do I have all these wires when I am suppose to be WIRELESS!!!

Anyway, I hope it's FinallyFixed and you are a HappyBlogger again real soon. Thanks for stopping by my Mother's Day Post. I'm trying to get going 'On The AtoZ RoadTrip'. Come join me...I'm Hitchhiking part of the way.

  13. Boy you are patient! I would go crazy without my laptop for more than 2 days! Computers, I thought they were supposed to make our lives easier?

  14. I am not a tech person so I am always worried about viruses and stuff. It's a shame that the bad guys will always be one step ahead of the prevention. Even when it comes to technology.

  15. 140 isn't bad. My computer never had problems until I let my kids use it. I had to turn one of them back to factory because it was so messed up. Now I won't let my kids use my computer.

    1. Sonya, The longer I was away the less it bothered me. Now I'm a little stressed at all the catching up I have to do!

Coffee Lady, Believe you me I kept really busy doing cleaning and gardening!

Joy, I was so shocked at all the "crap" for lack of a better word that he found on my computer, and here I thought not only was I careful but i thought I was protected!

Pamela, Sounds like me being a teenager and borrowing my Dad's car...it was sure to break down. Murphy's Law right? It's a good rule not to share electronics.

  16. Double darn, indeed. Why do people set these things in motion? They sure make things awkward for the rest of us--and expensive.

  19. A little while offline can be a very good thing. $140 isn't all that bad considering what I've heard some people have been through financially with computers, but then, it is all relative to how much you can really afford to sink into it.

    Glad you are back. ~Mary

  20. But so worth it Jen! Welcome back and thanks for heads up about the protection we all use. We use McAfee and so far so good.

  21. Cheaper than a new puter, I guess, but wow! I can't believe Kapersky didn't catch it. Glad you're back.

    1. Francene, I guess to infect someones computer with malware and viruses is some sort of who can top this game to smart people, but they're really dumb people in my opinion.

Teresa, Glad to see you too! Even if the wallet is a little lighter :)

Angela, Don't leave home without them! We are so very dependent on them aren't we?

Stacy, I think I had problems long before I put Kaspersky in which was recently. My previous program McAfee just never ran right I think I was vulnerable then or maybe that was the symptom???

Maria, I had to call the computer guy again today and do a few tweaks to my settings since it wasn't %100 after I got it home and running. I'm praying!!

  23. Oh the m word.
I just had a "malware" notice on my blog when you clicked on over to it. Apparently one of the advertising buttons was causing it.
You just never know nowadays. I'm glad that they could fix it!!!
