home or away?

With our mums set out in their usual location on the front porch and Bill busy at the task of burning leaves in the burn barrel I took a walk around the property.

Thoughts of my family on Long Island are heavy on my heart as I stroll amongst the woods. Leaves gently falling all around me and it dawned on me Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

The weather here has been more like shorts and t-shirt weather for the past few days but nothing good lasts forever and rain is in the forecast. I can't help but notice all those little things that make fall such a beautiful season.

Pine cones strewn on a bed of pine needles on the ground, trees gone to seed. It really is a sight to see and it's all right out my back door.

This Thanksgiving Bill, Mom my cousin Jeanmarie and I will be heading up to New York to my brother's house. It was actually their turn to have Thanksgiving here with us but we have a family wedding the next day so they're having us two years in a row.

How about you? Will you be spending Thanksgiving at home or will you be going away like us?

  1. What beautiful views and photos, Jen!

In my opinion, it doesn't matter where you get together, as long as you can get together!

  2. Beautiful photos! I'm staying here in Texas, but going to my sister-in-law's house for dinner. I love Thanksgiving and I'm so glad I'm not responsible for hosting it at my house. I prefer to go somewhere else:) I will bring a homemade pie and my family's traditional ambrosia salad.

    1. Sounds like you're all set, have a blessed Thanksgiving Pamela if I don't get to say it before.
Our family is all over the place this Thanksgiving. But everyone has someone to be with and as Ms A said as long as you're together then that's what counts.

  3. You have awesome front yard.
We will be home for Thanksgiving. I've cooked many a Thanksgiving dinner and am thankful I've been able to do so.

  4. WOW! I LOVE your photos! What a beautiful tree in the front yard! And those seed pods? Spectacular! Thanks for posting them!
We will stay home on Thanksgiving Day. We do a communal dinner where everyone is in charge of something so no one feels as if it all falls to him/her. It's very low key and, somewhere in there, will be a lovely neighorhood walk and maybe a movie. Very quiet and peaceful. I am planning to drive down to Silicon Valley to see my brother and his family the next day - about a two hour drive, over the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge and through San Francisco - best to leave early before the big traffic.

  5. I love the color of the trees and the ground underneath them! Glad you got a bit of Indian summer type weather before the cool descends once again. Can't believe Thanksgiving is already here; this year flew! I have to work on Thanksgiving so not sure what we are doing for dinner that evening; might get together with hubby's brother/sister in law. Son is going to his girlfriend's house about 70 miles away. Friday night we will go out to my brother's with his two kids; one of them is married with three kids of her own, plus my sister in law's mom and sister and other family members will be there. My neice puts on a dinner at her church for homeless or those that need a meal on Thanksgiving, so my brother/sister in law watch her kids and she and her hubby go with other volunteers to put on the dinner than the next night they celebrate Thanksgiving. (she's been doing it, I think this year will be the 10th one; what is really neat is they really don't have any idea how many they will serve, but prepare for a lot and they have never ran out of food until after the last person is served :)

  6. That first photo is breathtakingly beautiful!! As many mean pollen pine trees we have around here I haven't seen a pine cone in AGES. We use to collect them because my dad use them as kindling in the fireplace.

We are actually head to Virginia - Manassas. We have some friends there that we use to be stationed with. Another military family is coming in from Ohio so we will be gathering with friends. It's sure to be a fun time. Have a safe trip and enjoy yours time with family.

  7. Great pics. At this point, our leaves have mostly fallen, and we're in our winter jackets.

We'll be going down to Massachusetts to visit my family for Thanksgiving - with 2 kids and 3 dogs. Yikes!

    1. I've never been to a Friday wedding but there's always a first for everything! All I know is they better not serve turkey at the wedding or I'm gonna be MAD!

  9. Beautiful pic Jen! I so ♥ your property! We will be going out to dinner at a golf resort country club here in PA because my b-day falls so close to turkey day this year. They are very popular around these neck of the woods, and the price is economical. Can't beat it for all the fixings you can eat without the clean up. We've eaten there before and food is phenomenal.

    1. What a great idea! I've never eaten out for Thanksgiving. It really sounds like heaven no cooking no dishes. But I do get to go to the country club the day after for a wedding so I guess that's something! Have a great Thanksgiving my friend.

  16. These are my favorite post of yours. You are truly a gifted photographer. The colors are amazing. You travel soooo much! Hope your mom does well on the trip! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Jen. Kids should be walking in my door soon for 9 days at home. Yippee (I'm already tired from cooking and I'm sure they'll be that dreaded stuff that needs soaping.)
