how things change

I love this picture of my sons Eric and Matthew with their friend Bill. It was taken years ago...I'm guessing 18 maybe 20 on a week long skiing trip that we had taken the kids on.

One evening we took the boys out for an Italian dinner. We settled down and ordered our meals I can't remember what everyone else ordered but I got the squid and Bill ( pictured below in the middle) had never seen anyone eat (calamari) before. Clearly Bill our guest was pretty grossed out by my choice of meal; his facial expressions said it all.

At the end of our vacation week when we dropped him off at his house his mother greeted him at the door and asked him how his week was he said " Momma you are NOT gonna believe what Jennifer ate!"

It was really pretty cute.

Now lets jump ahead to present day.

Bill is an adult who works in a city that my husband and I visit frequently for get-away weekends. It is not uncommon for us to try to meet with him for at least a drink and if his schedule allows dinner. Last time we had dinner he chose a lovely little place which happened to be Italian. The three of us, Bill, my husband named bill too and myself ordered a bottle of wine and then decided to order appetizers. My husband ordered soup, I ordered salad and Bill ordered fried calamari (squid).

I just grinned :) Then I told him what he did when he was a little boy. He didn't recall but enjoyed hearing what he had said over some tender squid and a nice crisp white wine!

I'm happy to join my friend Martha over at Seaside Simplicity again this week for Flashback Friday. You're welcome to link up and share a great photo from your photo albums or bins and a good story if you have one. It's great fun, really it is!

  1. OK, this (young Bill's comment) made me laugh out loud! ... When living in Florida, a co-worker invited me for lunch, then took the liberty of ordering for both of us. When I inquired what, exactly, was this calamari business ... and learned the answer... I couldn't help but blurt, "You're feeding me BAIT?!"

That's so neat that you and (your) Bill are still able to visit Bill and enjoy some sweet memories!

  2. Too cute!! But it goes with my theory that our taste buds do grow up and mature as we grow up and mature. I'm sure that time was a very special time for you all with memories that you still carry to this day

  7. We had some calamari at DD1 Graduation dinner and my young nephew joked that I was eating Sponge Bob Squarepants. We have called it Bob ever since.

  10. Mmm...I ♥ calamari! That's all I craved during my pregnancy with Isaiah. My Father in law introduced me to it. At the time we were living in Port Jefferson, Long Island. They have the best seafood on the island! Kids are so funny...lol Their taste buds continuously change from the time their born until adulthood. Boys taste buds graduate a little earlier than girls I must say. If sheet rock was edible I swear we would have no walls because my son the rotor rooter child would eat them. lol He never use to like a lot of things he does now. He's a bottomless pit! :)

    1. Been to Port Jeff many times, what a great place to live. Such a good vibe in that town with all the shops, cafes, galleries, food.

My kids were always good eaters not to picky and were always willing to try new things. The only thing I consider weird is Matthew will eat sushi but won't eat any cooked fish, weird!

  11. Lol! That is too funny. I love calamari. Dang and I don't recall that I've had any since I lived in Florida. That has been over 8 years now. That's one of those things that I asked, "What is it?" after I tried it and like it.

  15. I think I would feel the same as young Bill did I can't bring myself to even taste squid. I love prawns though as long as they take them out of the shell for me. Lovely memories Jen,
