sometimes you just have to roll with it

We sat on the edges of our seats with our cameras at the ready as the school principal called the names of all the children who made the honor roll both A and A/B for the entire year. My daughter and I glanced at each other when my grandsons name wasn't called.

What?

We traded looks. You know the kind that Mom's and Grandmothers trade because we think our kids are the smartest and best looking. I know you know what I'm talking about if you have kids!

When the children who have "good grades" in this school they are acknowledged for excelling by being asked to stand in place and face the audience. I thought that was a rather nice way for the kids to be seen and appreciated for their efforts. After what seemed forever, speeches by countless teaches & guests and an adorable music program by the children the graduation concluded.

My youngest grandson is now headed to middle school in September. Where did the time go?

After we said our goodbyes to the teacher and walked out to the parking lot and we opened up his report card. Honor roll.....for all the report cards. Apparently there must have been an oversight. One which Xavier didn't seem all that bothered about, he's an easygoing child.

So my blog friends this is my grandson Xavier.

He was on the A/B honor roll the entire year. I was hoping you would be his audience.  Let's make believe the principle is saying his name...Xavier....hes turning...he's turning....he's facing you... I'm clapping, clapping......

Are you clapping?
Louder, louder..
I can't hear you !

  1. Yay Xavier! Maybe they couldn't say his name. I know when my daughter was commended her first year at the award ceremony, the principal got all flabbergasted trying to pronounce our last name.

  3. You mean they totally did not acknowledge him? I would of been in tears.

Congratulations to Xavier for his achievements. Now its on the middle school - bless his heart for being a easy going kid - I would not be a easy going mom at all if they forgot my kid.

Oh well, I guess in the big picture of life, it really doesn't matter - its just fluff. He's got the real prize!!!

  4. YAY, Xavier! Your rock, Kiddo!
and, truthfully, the fact that it didn't shake you (or your mom or your grandma) up that your name wasn't announced is AWESOME! Sure, it's great when that external appreciation happens but it's the internal appreciation that matters the most. But I think you guys know that.
And, as someone who orchestrates such events as honors assemblies for my middle school, I know that, from time to time, such mistakes have occurred. It makes me angry when such things happen - mad at myself for not catching what is typically a transcription and/or computer error. And I try to make it up to the student who was left out - but things DO happen.
    I am CLAPPING!

Coffee Lady, He was more interested in where we were going to eat after!

JT, Thanks for clapping. We do understand that in school where there are so many kids and so much to do it's not a perfect world and things happen.

  9. Yes I'm clapping too. What a handsome lad and brains with it! The girls will be queuing round the block. Not many children wouldn't have been bothered at their name not being called.

  14. Clapping very loudly for him!!!! That is a big accomplishment! Last year my daughter wasn't called for the all A's award and medal that went with it at the end of the year. Immediately after the ceremony, I went to the assistant principal (who I am on a good basis with, my child had her as a teacher in elementary school) and asked her why she didn't get the award. She told me that she would look into it. The next morning she called within an hour of dropping my daughter off for school; and told me yes it was an oversight on their part and she now has her award. She didn't get the medal, but I just really wanted the paper saying a job well done. Kids work hard for those grades and when they are oversighted it makes them not want to work as hard. I am very very proud of Xavier and I am clapping for him now... I hope he has a great middle school experience, so far Elexis' has been wonderful.
