do you grocery shop with your eyes open?

Do you grocery shop with your eyes open? From atop my new soap box I would like to tell you I never have.  I've been pretty blind; foolish if you will, big time. The kind of foolish that's had my blood pressure on the rise and the weight packing on a few pounds a year over these past years and before I knew it my girlish size eight figure now had a one in front of it.

Size 18, how the hell did that happen? Bad food choices, that's how!

So as I said in my things ` a changin post hubby and I have made some big changes in our lives.

What happened when we went to the grocery store the first time after committing to those very changes? What changes you ask? Well I'll tell you...cutting out all wheat/flour and sugar from our diets and which basically eating fresh veggies and herbs, all fruit, fish / shell fish, lean meats, yogurts, cheeses, eggs, beans, brown rice....you get the picture.[organic whenever possible]. Activity lots of activity....eventually exercise once the doctor approves something for us when we go later this month.

Needless to say going to the grocery store was an eye opener. We went in the store and spent a good amount of time picking through all the fresh produce, fruit, veggies, herbs. That department is located on the right side of the store, then towards the back corner we stopped by and picked up some fresh fish. Directly along the back we picked up some chicken, turkey, pork tenderloin and some lean beef.  The along the other side of the store we went to the dairy and picked up, low fat milk, organic Greek yogurt, some goats cheese as well as some other cheese selections that we'd use on salads. We pretty much traversed the three sides of the store never visiting one aisle in the middle of the market at all.

Then we realized we did need a couple of other things but our time spent in those inner aisles was minimal, some good olive oil, oatmeal, almonds, brown rice and beans; lot of beans in may varieties!

Then we were gone we paid first though...
No boxes, very few cans [which I now read the labels], no processed foods, nothing frozen, all fresh!
My eyes are open now!
Hopefully my health and girlish figure will return some day in the future....
Or should I say womanish!

There's a lot of money to be saved not spending a lot of time filling my cart with food from middle aisles. My bill at check out is a lot less than it used to be. Now I can't say that I'm not going to be shopping more frequently because it hasn't been long enough to say.

We are already feeling the positive effects from changes and it's only been a week. In my next post will I'll fill you in  on what we've noticed so far.

  2. It was so weird! Before the cart was usually full of chips and ten boxes of pasta at least.

Now the funny thing is I think the produce guy thinks I'm a stalker I spent so much time there!

  3. Go, Jen, Go!!! The pretty colors of the produce aisle do the trick for me. I love local markets where things are fresh and the "middle aisle" stuff is at a minimum. Although, you may pay more for organic or the good stuff, you save with what you don't buy that's crap. I love to eat and all that good stuff is just YUM!!!

I'm excited for you and your hubby!!! Don't look back!!!

  4. It's wonderful that you are deciding to eat better! We all need to encourage one another to do that. It's SO hard, I've done it myself a few times. I slip up, then have to get back to it. This is a good reminder. We can do it!

  5. Good job Jen! Keep up the good work!! That's pretty much how I shop for meals but with two teen boys in the house they pile in plenty of the other junk too.

  7. Good for you! I look forward to picking up some tips from you...it's a constant struggle here between our desire to eat well and our lack of time to meal plan/shop/cook...

  8. Good luck with everything. I'm not interested in giving up wheat or pasta, but I'm still losing weight because I exercise now and I don't overeat.

    1. It's been a good change for me personally less joint aches now that I'm off the flour and sugar. I think the aches come from a combination of diet and age.

  9. Good for you! I mainly shop the fruits and vegetable aisles, but I always leave with some sort of chocolate or sweet. If you're interested, Taste of Home has a wonderful magazine called Healthy Cooking. The recipes are delicious and easy to make.

  13. I try to do it with my heart open & not exploit people(certain companies are known for that)& my eyes open too. I'm vegan of late so that helps me keep some of the bad stuff on the down side, cause I can't have it.

  14. You go girl! I had to go try on a brides maid dress today and it was HIDEOUS!! Seriously. Seriously. Horrible..... I need to do something. **sigh** Maybe your changin' ...

  15. You go Girl! It is said that the only shopping aisles necessary are the ones on the perimeter of the store which is all the fresh foods and the necessities! It's a stark reality reaching that point but glad you are now looking to be healthy!

  16. It seems like you have the right amount of enthusiasm and education to make this a new life long change! Good luck with it Jen, and I know here it's Farmer's Market time, the best place to stock up on some great local veggies & fruits!

  17. I'm trying to do the same, my weight is not staying the same as it has done for years but is steadily creeping up and up. It's very hard as I can do the healthy eating for about a week then I get bored. Also it's too cold and wet in this country to eat salades.

  20. We've been gluten free for quite some time now-even longer with no refined sugar. I only shop the perimeter of the grocery store now with the exception of the baking aisle where I buy turbinado/coconut sugar/honey. When I do use those sugars, I am using organic and only minimally processed. Otherwise, it's produce, some meat/fish, and some dairy. It has been FANTASTIC!

I have tons of sites for smoothies and RAW food recipes as well as gluten free if you need/want some! Good luck and good for you!

  21. Hey girl, checking up on you to see how you are doing with your new lifestyle? Take good care of yourself!

  22. I have often tried to stay in the outside aisles, too. But you are lucky, for me, most of the time, shopping the perimeter is more expensive. But it is also worth it for health reasons.
