A to Z Challenge F is for flowers

theme‘My views of the south’as seen thru the eyes of a former New Yorker

We've worked for years to get our vegetable garden soil in shape by tilling in natural matter such as leaves so that we can grow organic veggies.

It’s a completely different story with the gardens surrounding the house. We have some bushes and a crape myrtle even an azalea or two. Flowers however are really hard to grow here because of the heat and the huge amounts of clay in the soil.

Needless to say we do have flowers but they’re mostly perennials/bulbs many which have been on this property since we've move here like these tiger lillies.
.

Or these wildflowers which I photographed down by my pond one day. I have no idea what they are but they are strange and lovely at the same time.

Sad but true; other than putting an occasional flower in my herb pots on my back porch; I've basically given up throwing my money away on frying flowers in the hot southern sun.

Do you do plant flowers at your house?

  1. We have a lot of daffodils that were planted before we moved in. I'm a terrible gardener, but I'm trying to learnn. My grandmother (in-law) is an incredible gardener, so I plant the flowers she says have a chance of making it where she tells me to plant them.

  2. We have a lot of sand when I live. And it seems not to matter how much new top soil we add. The sand eventually finds it way back. So I plant all my flowers in pots and hanging baskets. Beautiful pictures, by the way

  3. I do plant flowers here... but mostly of the no-maintenance perennial variety LOL I used to love gardening but for the past ten years or so I've found that the mosquitoes make it very unpleasant. Edmonton's mosquitoes... lemme tell ya, you've never seen the like LOL

  4. The heat isn't the only thing that kills flowers around here... I have black thumbs! What you have looks gorgeous, and is obviously pretty hardy and does well!

  5. Strange and lovely indeed. Love the bright red color. Also, in the bottom shot, they look like some sort of fruit flowers.
I don't plant at our house, but we do have beautiful roses in the front and back yard. We do our best to maintain them, and so far so good.

  8. Flowers...Weeds...whatever is green or blooming...we take it all here in Texas. These days my philosophy due to the drought is...I don't grow it or buy it if I can't eat it or wear it. Sad, huh? I do love flowers and gardening. It's hard this time of year to stick to my 'NoMoCanGrow' Motto! Pretty photos. My post for Letter F is about Flowers, too!

  9. Oh, I start off each season by planting flowers in a little area in front of the house. I learned rather quickly, though, that the deer like my flowers. It’s pretty frustrating. However, I have found that deer do not like Flowering Vinca. They resemble Impatiens. So that is pretty much what I plant.

  10. This is the second flower post I've seen today! I guess spring is on people's minds. I absolutely love those tiger lilies. There are some tulips and other bulbs around my house, but I don't think they're as pretty.

  11. We have a heavy clay soil too, and hot dry summers, but I still try to plant a few annuals in the front yard every year, and I love seeing the the perennials change during the seasons. Many were already here when we moved in, and I've added a few here and there. We don't have a gorgeous garden, but I've learned to enjoy the flowers one or two blossoms at a time. Love your tiger lilies!

  12. We have lots of daffodils too. I just bought two hanging pots of pansies which I am sure I will manage to kill off in no time. I tend to do that. Wish I had a greener thumb. Mostly I enjoy everyone else's good gardening and I putts along. I have managed to keep a few things alive and for that I thank God. Enjoying your pics. God bless, Maria

  13. I can't wait until I can plant again. We've got a while before we can do that here in Maine. I still have snow in my yard! Happy to see flowers again...even if they are on my computer screen. :)

  15. That stinks that flowers are so hard to grow - but on the other hand, you have naturally growing tiger lilies! They're so beautiful, and so hard to come by up north.

  16. I'm a terrible gardener. It has been so wet here over the past few years that there's not much chance for flowers to grow. Last summer I have a few pots with lovely flowers and this year I have thrown down lots of wild flowers seeds in part of the garden so just hoping for the best.

  17. These are beautiful pictures. Did you take these? I suck at gardening. I do better with flowers, I love them, but I forget to water them and they die. I really can't be trusted with nature.

  19. Your lilies are beautiful Jen! I don't recognize those red flowers....would probably never survive up here.
We planted TONS of flowers here over the years and they were beautiful for years until the trees and shrubs grew too and shaded them out. Now our only, well mostly, flowers are on shrubs/bushes.
