This is my third year or participating in The A-Z Blogging Challenge and I’ll be writing a blog post a day each day of the month except Sunday for the month of April.
This year I’ll be doing a theme which I’ve decided to call ‘My views of the south’.
I will show you my south as I see it with my camera….. and I
will tell you from my perspective as a former New Yorker what I find to be
unique about this place that I now call home.
Follow along as I share with you what I consider the South’s ordinary
even extraordinary beauty one letter at a time.
Enjoy!
I was trying to be good this year and pre-wrote a number of my posts, so this morning I went to publish my A post and realized I never did an A post!! Sorry I’m late folks!! Not the greatest start for this challenge but here goes…
We have a large piece of property; it would be safe to say it is a farm although we don’t have farm animals nor do we grow large amounts of crops. Regardless of that, taking care of our land can be burdensome; there mowing, weeding raking leaves and generally making sure that it looks as neat and tidy as possible. There are acres and acres of woods so that is a huge difference from the 100 x 80 parcel that we lived on in New York.
One of my favorite things about living here in the south is the abundance of fruit trees. We have peaches, plums, pears and apples right out the back door. There is nothing better than picking a fresh apple off the tree and eating it in the shade of that very tree.
I have made apple sauce to serve with dinner with freshly picked apples and of course apple pies and cakes. Mmm….apple pie is wonderful and one of my favorite deserts!
What’s your favorite apple desert?
Do you have an apple tree?
Loved fresh apples off my grandparents trees when I was a little girl, granny's apple pies and applesauce. I have nothing like that around my house.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so green in that picture, Jen! Does sound like a nice place to live especially with all the fruit trees around! My favorite apple dessert is simple, apple pie with ice cream on it. No we don't have an apple tree, but did have one when we lived in Oregon; that was fun to pick the apples!

Makes me want to quit my essay writing for today and just take a good book to read under the tree. Stunning!

That apple tree is AMAZING. You are one lucky lady
ReplyDeleteMs A, There's nothing like Grandmas cooking right?
DeleteBetty, I'm with you on the pie Betty...All that green grows vey fast and takes a lot of work to keep up!
Shonae, I know what you mean! I have a hammock for that!
Paula, When we lived up north we used to have to drive to the orchards to do our picking Paula, this is much more convenient!
I wish I had an apple tree. I think I belong in California. I could grow much of my food.
ReplyDeleteI wish that I had an apple tree! However, my dear Mother In Law is very good about sharing her apples with us, so we can have as much applesauce and other apple goodies as I'm willing/have time to take care of. Can't wait to see more of your neck of the south!
ReplyDeleteHi Jen...I've been watching for your post to pop up on my AtoZ BlogRoll all day....so glad you made it. Funny you forgot the Letter 'A' being from the Big Apple, posting a Big Apple Tree photo and tantalizing your readers with delicious Apple recipes. Thanks for stopping by...you are going to love the photos I've collected for the challenge...and I hope the stories, too. See ya tomorrow for the Letter 'B'. I thought about you on Saint Patty's Day...I bet you thought about me too. LOL!!!

Green. I see green. I haven't seen green since November. Ahhhhh, green!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see you doing your A-Z thing! I'm reading, not writing much :-(, and trying to sell my house. Since I'm reading, I will be reading here where the weather is warm and spring-like!!!
Jolie, I hear it's beautiful there!
DeleteMarcy, You're blessed to have such a wonderful mother in law and her trees are an additional plus :)
Sue, I know I know I've been a bad blogger! That's one a a few apple trees we have but it's the prettiest for sure. And you know i did think of you on St Patty's. I love my quilt and it will as I said on your blog when I commented my "Q" post...(spoiler alert)
Gina, Today it's 82 and sunny here. Our yard is a muddy mess and it's rained SO much I cannot even express how horrible this season has been. No gardens for us yet, we're so behind; the whole thing is very depressing. The picture is from last spring..
Yay! I'm excited to see you doing the A to Z again! AND you're sharing your wonderful pictures. I still love your moon shots from awhile back. Anyway, no, I don't have an apple tree, but I grew up on a farm with a small fruit orchard in the back which included several apple, cherry and pear trees. It was wonderful!! And I love making homemade applesauce. But, my favorite apple dessert is probably apple crisp with caramel drizzled on top or apple pie with a big slice of cheddar cheese melted all over it! Shhhh...don't tell the readers over at Whole Foods Living! :) ~ Angela, A to Z participant from Web Writing Advice (http://www.webwritingadvice.com/) and Whole Foods Living (http://wholefoodsliving.blogspot.com/)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful apple tree! I'll bet your applesauce and apple pies are delicious! Looking forward to more of your A to Z posts!

Hi Jen - perhaps when you next comment over at my south on the south coast of England you'll tell me where you are .. I've forgotten!
ReplyDeleteApples - we had an orchard when I was growing up and apples were a permanent part of our lives .. love them and all sorts of deserts made out of them .. I add them into salads, and have apple sauce too or apple slices lightly fried or baked with pork ..
Now I really need some fruit for my breakfast .. it's covered with fruit! Cheers Hilary
I love apple and blackberry pie with some fresh cream. mmm, now I'm hungry!
ReplyDeleteHave a great A to Z month!
Angela, Let's just agree apples are a healthy snack and the rest will be our secret ;)
DeleteJulie, Thanks Julie or should I say Betty??? lol
Hilary, My grandmother was from Ireland and enjoyed fried apples as well funny how Americans think that's strange but it was something we grew up eating regularly.
Rebecca, Thanks for stopping by Rebecca. The south is the land of pies of every variety you'd be in heaven here if you don't already reside here..
Fresh applesauce is the best.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you're doing the A-Z...I've always enjoyed them :)
That looks beautiful, Jen. We have orange trees and avocado trees here in Los Angeles. Love apple anything -- pie, applesauce. Wonderful photo.
ReplyDeleteKimberly, Thanks there lady. I've missed you since I've been absent from my blog. I'm glad you've visited hope you're doing well.
DeleteSilvia, You live in a beautiful area of California if I remember correctly and the climate is perfect for all sorts of produce I'd imagine.
So pretty! We have a crabapple tree and that's not even close!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous Jen! My dog would love these woods.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that photo.
ReplyDeleteNO green ANYTHING in Minnesota, but waiting patiently.
xx
Stacy, Have you ever tried making jelly out of those crab apples? I hear it's rather tasty!
ReplyDeleteAnne, He'd be filled with ticks in a NY minute!
KIm, We're just starting to bud here...last years photo. But i sympathize this winter was a bitch!
Hi Jen, I looked through A through D. I like the way you start with a view out; then the next three all include views back at you. Clever. Looking forward to reacquainting with your blog after a long hiatus. God bless, Maria
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I would love to have fruit trees! Where do you live in the south? I'm in FL. Maybe we've talked about this before, and I've forgotten. Apple pie is my favorite too. Can't beat it!
