A-Z 2013 the letter O

credit

I love Olive oil.

I use it all the time in my kitchen. And I don't only use it when I make Italian! I use it when I make vinaigrette's for my salads, to marinate my meats and fish before grilling. I even it to drizzle on my veggies and grill them too.

They taste very different to me depending on the region in which the olives were grown and imported from. I actually prefer the taste of those oils from Italy or Chile. Actually Trader Joe’s has a great store brand that’s reasonably priced.

My “O” word Olive oil.

Did you know how versatile Olive oil is? It is one very versatile oil... Here’s a few practical uses that you might find handy around the house. There really are hundreds if you're interested you can Google more.

Condition your hair
Use ½ cup of heated olive oil applied liberally to your hair. Cover with a shower cap or other plastic cover. Leave for 45 minutes then shampoo and rinse.

Treat acne
Combine 4 tbsp of salt with 3 tbsp of olive oil. Work this mixture on to your face and let it sit for one minute, do this for a total of one week, then twice weekly after will suffice.

Shave with it
Have you ever cut yourself up shaving with soap? Next time smooth some olive oil on your face or legs for a smoother safer shave!

Cleans paint off skin
Mix equal parts of either salt or sugar and oil. Rub on paint covered hands and the paint should come off. The bonus is not only will your hands be clean, they’ll be soft.

Mascara remover
Dab some oil on a cotton ball and wipe off that mascara.

Furniture Polish
Mix olive oil with lemon two parts to one and spritz it on your wood furniture. Wipe with a cotton cloth.

How do you use olive oil,any unique ways?

  1. My mum used to rub warm olive oil on my chest to help my lungs I have no idea why. I use it if we have a sore ear a tiny drop in your ear with a cotton wool plug to keep it in usually sorts it out.I use it in all my cooking but when we go to hot countries on holiday it always tastes better.

  3. What great uses for olive oil. I'll have to try the tip about paint removal as we're planning to do a lot of painting this summer.

  4. Wow! Thanks for the tips. Considering how much I pay for a bottle of vegetable oil, I don't think I'll be shaving with it. But I will experiment with it too. I love olive oil too. And even though the tend to come in a pretty bottle, I transfer them over to other pretty bottles. I only started using it a few years ago on salads first. then for sautéing. Now I rub it on any chicken or fish that will be grilled, baked or put in the rotisserie.

  6. My parents cultivated my appreciation for olive oil throughout my life. Love it. It is almost habitually overlooked outside of Italian cooking though~at least with the people I know.

  7. Hi Jen. Yes I love olive oil too and included it in my 'O' post today also. Never thought about using it for the things you suggest though. That is pretty neat. Thanks for sharing these great uses. I'll add oil pulling to that and you can read about that at my place. God bless, Maria Delight Directed Living

  8. I use olive oil for cooking, but I didn't realize it had so many different uses. Great idea for removing paint. Though I'd be afraid that I'd breakout if I washed my face with it.

  9. Thanks for all of the great tips. I generally have some olive oil on hand, but we're completely out right now. I'll have to remember to add it to my shopping list.

  10. There is a store at an outdoor mall in Branson, MO that just sells olive oils and balsamic vinegars. You can taste each one from a little cup. Personally I prefer coconut oil for most things, but I rarely marinate meats or make vinaigrette. Olive oil is certainly an excellent O choice!
