you can call em the pits if you want

Remember those hairs that started to appear on your body around the time of your adolescence?

NO not THAT hair it is after all "U" day..... I was talking about the hair located in your underarms.

Underarm, today's "U" word......

I don't know about you but when mine sprung up I begged my mother to be able to shave. I for one didn't what my pits filled with hair! Any little thing and the boys would make fun and I remember this being one thing they loved to tease the girls about.

Notice how below I have a nice little grouping of the letter "U's"; you know why? I did a Google image search of underarms and armpits and they are really quite unattractive hair or no hair; hence no pit pictures!

Thank my lucky stars I was born in the age when shaving was a widely accepted practice because otherwise my begging would have fell on deaf ears. Apparently here in the west the practice of woman shaving their underarms came to the the US and Britain and Canada in the early 1900's with the invention of the safety razor but was not widely accepted in Europe until after WWII.

Did you know that most Muslims, both male and female shave as a matter of their religious practice? I found this to be most interesting!

Competitive swimmers not only shave their underarms but all their body hair to help their swim times.  And now a days men are engaging in what they now call "man grooming" click here  for all the details, it includes the men shaving their underarms as well as other areas of the body. Very interesting!!

I've been shaving my underarms since I was twelve. How about you?
Do you shave your underarms or do you prefer the more natural and un-shaved way?

  1. Well . . . if you really want to know :) . . .
I do shave my armpits, but not much grows there anymore.

  2. It depends. If I'm out in public with my underarms out, yes. If I'm on the beach, I actually prefer a professional waxing over shaving. But I'm a full-time writer. So I'm home most of the time. When I'm home, I do whatever I feel like, and that's typically no make-up and no shaving.

    1. I get my eyebrows and lip waxed but I think I'm to hairy for waxing my underarms! A good sharp razor is great!

  3. I was teased at a very young age of my hairy legs, bad teasing. Bully teasing by a neighborhood girl. So I started shaving my legs in second grade and arms years later. Shocking, I know. And I remember my mom asking everyone in my family what they thought. And I remember the first time shaving my legs in my second grade self. I still hate they girl.

That's pretty surprisingly you couldn't find an armpit pic!!!!!

  4. Funny topic! I remember going to a Girl Scout lock in at a swimming pool and having one of the older girls point out how hairy my pits were, and she compared me to Madonna. I begged and pleaded with my mom to allow me to shave after that, I was probably around 10-11. Finally after some persuasion help from my aunt my mom got me an electric razor. I have of course switched to a bladed razor, but I do shave them always.

  5. Of course I shave and when I was a kid I didn't ask, just went for it. I figured that was better than asking and getting no for an answer. Guess it worked for me since I never remember any discussion taking place about it.

  6. I shave mine. I can't remember when I started though but it must have been early since I am the proud owner of 1/4 Italian genes.
